Camarillo Street ADU
A two-car garage converted into a one-bedroom accessory dwelling with its own street access.
The Brief
A detached garage used for storage, and a family who wanted somewhere for a parent to live independently on the same lot. The constraints were the existing slab, the setback line and the sewer lateral.
The Design
The plan puts wet services on the shared wall with the main house run, keeps a single clear span for living, and uses a high clerestory instead of side windows to keep privacy from the neighbouring lot.
The Build
Garage conversions are permit-led work. Structure, egress, ceiling height, insulation, fire separation and utility metering were all resolved on paper with the city before a stud was moved. The existing slab was tested, then partially cut for new drainage.
The Finish
A printed panel above the kitchenette carries a full-height graphic so the small space reads as designed rather than converted.
