Chandler Boulevard Addition
A rear addition that adds a bedroom and family room without reading as an add-on from the street.
The Brief
The house had grown a family and run out of rooms. The owners were wary of the common outcome: an addition that looks bolted on and leaves the original rooms dark.
The Design
Rather than extend the existing roof line, the addition sits slightly lower and steps back, which keeps the street elevation unchanged and lets a clerestory bring daylight into the original rear rooms instead of blocking them.
The Build
New foundations, a tie-in to the existing structure and a re-routed sewer line. Existing rooms were kept habitable for most of the schedule by staging the tie-in as the last structural move.
The Finish
A printed glass panel between the old and new sections marks the join rather than hiding it.
